Aligarh is also famous as a center for various movements that have helped in re-shaping India with the start of the Mohammedan Anglo Oriental College by Sir Syed Ahmed Khan in 1875. This College is today known as Aligarh Muslim University and is famous worldwide as a hub for western culture.

This movement was started to help Muslims come to terms with changing realities of the world. Aligarh has also been a launch pad for nationalist movements in India, including the famous Khilafat Movement of 1920s.with this, a new breed of Muslim intelligence people were found in Aligarh, who contributed generously to the functioning of the government and its authorities. There are many nationalist leaders who have made Aligarh famous like Zakir Hussein, Syed Brothers and Maulana Abul Kalam Azad.
